William G. ‘Bill’ Bickel

Oct. 27, 1957 to Jan. 27, 2019

William G. ‘Bill’ Bickel, 61, Duncansville, passed away Sunday at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh.  He was born in Altoona, son of the late John C. and Mary Ellen (Leipold) Bickel. 

Surviving are his wife, Debra Bickel; his girlfriend, Kelly Maruna; a son, William G. ‘Buddy’ Bickel, Jr.; a daughter, Lauren M. (Scott) Merritts; two step-sons: Craig Klock and Zachery Baker; two step-daughters:  Amber and Tara Baker; five grandchildren:  Kaidyn and Karli Klock, Liam and Oliver Merritts and Greyson Chesney; a brother, Ronald C. (Ellen) Bickel in MI; three sisters:  Donna Bickel of Altoona, Nancy (Richard) Brobeck of Bellefonte and Darlene ‘Dee’ Creek of Altoona; many nieces and nephews; and longtime very close friends: Dane and Karen Smith.

He was preceded in death by two brothers:  John and Tom Bickel and three sisters:  Barbara, Joan and Carol Bickel.

Bill was a 1976 graduate of Altoona High School.  He was owner and operator of Bickel Surplus and 764 Auction Center. 

He belonged to the Tyrone American Legion and the Coalport Moose.  He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, and gambling. He also enjoyed the thrill of an auction and watching NASCAR and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Bill was known as a big hearted, generous man who helped anyone in need.

Friends wills be received from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1, 2019, and from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019, at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona.  A funeral service will be held at noon on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019 at the Stevens Memorial Chapel by Pastor Bill Durstine.  Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park.
