Victor A. ‘Tony’ Gioiosa Sr.

June 15, 1933 – Jan. 9, 2020

Victor A. “Tony” Gioiosa Sr., 86, Altoona, passed away Thursday after a brief illness at UPMC Altoona.  He was born in Altoona, son of the late Michele A. and Donata M. (Perretta) Gioiosa.  He married Louise M. Maierhofer on Sept. 27, 1952 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years; a son, Victor A. Jr (Sherry) Gioiosa and a daughter, Tina (Ron) Johnston both in Altoona; three grandchildren:  Neil (Niki)  Gioiosa,  Abby (Ryan) Crider and Ross (Pam) Gioiosa; seven great-grandchildren:  Gracie, Jack, Luke, Finley, Emerson, Sylvie and Willa; two sisters:  Ann (Raymon) Hale of Altoona and Maria Menta of State College; many nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Lou Maierhofer; and sister-in-law Teresa Lang.

He was preceded in death by two brothers:  Mario and wife, Ann and Albert and wife, Alliene; a sister, Yolanda and husband, Leonard Pacifico; brothers-in-law: Terry Menta, Walter Lang and Joe and wife, Louise Maierhofer.

Tony was a 1951 graduate of Altoona High School and attended Penn State Altoona.  He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He retired from Butterick in 1995 after 44 years of service.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona.  He was also a member of the Bavarian Aid Society, Unter Uns and Cesare Battisti.

Tony enjoyed woodworking, fixing things, coaching swimming and was involved in the Boy Scouts of America. He especially enjoyed attending the sports and school events of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2020 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona where a vigil for the deceased will be held.  A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 16, 2020 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona, Father Brian Saylor officiating.  Committal will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Altoona where military honors will be held.
