Thomas M. Link

Date of Death: 3/23/2020

Thomas M. Link, 77, Patton passed away peacefully at home on March 23, 2020.  Born November 19, 1942 in Spangler, son of Daniel J. and Ruth (Whitehead) Link.  Preceded in death by parents, brother-in-law Joseph Mozina, sister-in-law Rita (Drotar) Switzler and nephews Christian Switzler, Scott Campbell and Devin Maurer.  Survived by wife Linda of nearly 50 years whom he married April 11, 1970, daughter Jill, son Dirk and wife Bridget Borelli, two granddaughters, Ainsley and Avery Link, sister Jeanne (Link) Mozina, mother-in-law Betty Lou Switzler, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  A graduate of Patton High School in 1960 and Indiana State College in 1964, he began his teaching career at Bethel Park High School 1964.  He continued his teaching and coaching career at Ferndale Area High in Johnstown (1967-1973), and later at Cambria Heights in Patton where he taught for 22 years.  Tom was a noted educator and athletic administrator, serving as athletic director at Cambria Heights from 1977 until his retirement in 1997.  He coached football and track for over 15 years, both at Ferndale and Cambria Heights, and also coached little league baseball for several years.  Tom was an accomplished and well-respected sports official, both locally and throughout the northeast, for over 40 years.  He officiated football and basketball at the high school and collegiate level, both in the PIAA and NCAA, and umpired softball at the high school level.  He had the honor of officiating college football games in Beaver Stadium, Mountaineer Field, and Pitt Stadium.  He also had the distinction of working state championships in basketball, football, and softball (2) and was recently honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Northern Cambria Softball Umpires Chapter.  He later served the officiating community as an observer and mentor for many additional years.  In addition to officiating sports, he enjoyed talking sports with family and friends, golfing, fishing and crossword puzzles.  He adored spending time with his granddaughters, watching them dance and perform and telling them jokes and riddles, and coloring with them as they sat on Pappy’s lap.  He also deeply loved his two kitties, Squeeks and Cloey.   Due to the recent COVID-19 recommendation and restrictions, a private viewing and service will be held for the family.   A larger celebration will be held at a later date, where additional family, friends and loved ones will be able to remember Tom and his life. Interment Fairview Cemetery, Patton.  Arrangements are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home, Inc., Patton.  You may leave the family online condolences at
