Susan Litzinger

Date of Death: 11/5/2018

Susan Litzinger

Dec. 29, 1952 - Nov. 5, 2018

Susan Litzinger, 65, Altoona, passed away Monday at her residence.  She was born in Altoona, daughter of Morgan and Joan (Fogel) Litzinger and was preceded in death by her father.

Surviving are; her mother of Altoona; a daughter, Sara Litzinger and Fiance, Ryan Harr of Columbus, OH; two grandchildren:  Ember Harr and Piper Harr, and a soon to be born grandson; a brother, Thomas Litzinger (Mary Ellen) of State College;three sisters:  Cheryl Cherry of Altoona, Jane Carey (Peter) of Ashville and Donna Cole (Jon) of West Jefferson, OH; sister-in-law, Carole Litzinger; special aunt, Nancy Fogel; special friends, Bob and Ramona Young; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, David Litzinger; and an infant sister, Mary Litzinger.

Susan was a 1971 graduate of Hollidaysburg Area High School, where she was the Salutatorian and a 1975 graduate of Lycoming College, graduating first in her class with a Bachelors’ Degree in Sociology.  She had worked for 10 years for Penn State University at both the Altoona and University Park Campuses and had previously worked at the Altoona Hospital Crisis Center.

She loved poetry, reading, writing, and playing the guitar.  She had a lifelong love of learning.

Susan was a survivor of mental illness.  Though it was a part of her life for many years, she refused to let it define her.  From her struggles, she developed courage, strength, resilience, faith, and purpose.  She was not only a loving daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and niece, but a driven, hard-working, and accomplished individual as well.  Her life was full of meaning from beginning to end, providing hope and inspiration to all, especially those facing similar obstacles.  Her story has always been the epitome of these three tenets: never give up, always look for the light at the end of the tunnel and take things one day at a time.

Friends will be received from 4 to 6:15 p.m., Friday, Nov. 9, 2018 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona. A funeral service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Stevens Memorial Chapel, Monsignor Michael Becker officiating.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made in Susan’s memory to:  Out of the Darkness, Suicide Prevention, 700 Park Ave., Altoona, PA  16602 or to UPMC Art Therapy Program, 20 Sheraton Dr., Altoona, PA  16601.
