                                                        March 12, 1921 – November 5, 2014

 

Shirley Glucroft, 93, of State College, formerly of Altoona and Fort Lauderdale, FL, died Wednesday in State College.   She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Isidor and Ann (Schiffman) Marcus. Shirley married Norman Glucroft July 4, 1943 in Altoona. He preceded her in death on May 27, 2010.

Shirley is survived by two children, Susan Rattner of Solebury, PA, and Ross Glucroft of Pensacola, FL, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Shirley was a graduate of Altoona High School, attended Penn State University and received an associate degree from Rider College.  She was a very active member of the Agudath Achim Synagogue where she served in many roles including president of the Sisterhood.  She started a branch of the American Israeli Lighthouse, creating brail books for the blind.

 As a young woman, she worked as a secretary until after her marriage, where she served as a court stenographer.  Later, she was partner with her husband in all of their enterprises, especially Roaring River Mills.  In addition, she had her own store, Taka Trading Company, which sold Asian imports.  

Shirley was known as a great sewer and needle worker, who made many of her own clothes.

At age 50 she received her pilot’s license, and enjoyed traveling with her husband and spending time with her family and friends.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 7, 2014, at Agudath Achim Cemetery in Altoona, by Rabbi Josh Wohl.
