Rudolph J.”Rudy” Vorndran, Sr.

January 31, 1937 – February 5, 2018

Rudolph J. Vorndran, Sr., 81, Altoona, passed away Monday at Maybrook Hills Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.  He was born in Altoona, son of the late Rudolf L. and Wilhelmina (Schneider) Vorndran. 

Surviving are a son, Rudolph J. Vorndran, Jr. of Altoona; a daughter, Heidi Cusick (Wayne) of St. Petersburg, FL; a grandson, Kevin Duncan, Jr.; a brother, Thomas Vorndran of Texas; and four sisters:  Pauline Marzo, Hilda Gordon, Cathy Vorndran and Christine Betar, all from Altoona; and a friend, Carolyn of Florida.

He was preceded in death by a sister Helen Odrechowski.

Rudy was a 1955 graduate of Altoona High School and a U.S. Army veteran.  He retired from the Altoona Police Department as a member of the police force and also retired from Bon Secours Hospital as a security guard.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Altoona.  He was a lifetime member of the Bavarian Aid Society and was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Unter Uns Society, Mid Atlantic Air Museum, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Mountain Top Sportsman’s Association, Cesare Battisti Club and the Altoona Railroader’s Museum.  He enjoyed photography, carpentry, bowling, gardening and traveling.  He was an avid sport’s fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Penn State Nittany Lions and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, February 9, 2018 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona where a vigil for the deceased will be held.  A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 10, 2018 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona, by Monsignor Timothy P. Stein.  Committal will be at St. Mary’s cemetery.                      

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions can be made to a charity of your choice in Rudy’s memory.
