Robert David “Mitch” Mitchell

December 6, 1935 – September 23, 2016

Robert David “Mitch” Mitchell, 80, of Altoona passed away Friday at his residence.  He was born in Altoona, son of the late Paul M. and Mary M. (Fields) Mitchell.  He married Doris Jean Newkirk in September 14, 1985.

He is survived by his wife; three children: Rick Myers of Ashburn, VA, Deborah Styer, of Round Hill, VA and Jennifer Kokoskie of Frederick MD; grandchildren: Jessica and Austin Styer, Ricky and Barbarba Myers and Natalie and Adam Kokoskie; a great-grandson: Jackson Mitchell Custer; niece: Debbie Steinbugl;  nephew; Steve Mitchell and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Mitch was also preceded in death by a brother Bill Mitchell.   He was a 1953 graduate of Altoona High School and attended Indiana State Teachers College.

He retired from Blair County Department of Weights and Measures. 

Mitch served in the U.S. Navy in the Korean War as a second class Radar man. He was very proud that he participated in Operation Wigwam, the first underwater test for the atomic bomb.

Mitch enjoyed playing golf and was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Penn State and WVU. He was a former member of Catholic War Veterans, Park Hills Country Club, Bavarian Aid Society and Swiss Club.

A graveside service will be held at10am, Friday, September 30, 2016, at Grandview Cemetery with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School: 2400 Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona, PA 16602, to be used for the football team in honor of the joy Mitch received supporting Richard Myers in his love of football at Bishop Guilfoyle.
