Richard "Dick" Bender

Date of Death: 4/6/2020

Richard “Dick” Bender, 71, of Carrolltown, PA passed away on April 6, 2020 as the world stood still for the coronavirus.  In his final months, he was cared for by the staff at Kane Glen Hazel Nursing Facility in Pittsburgh, PA.   Dick’s daughters are grateful to the staff at Kane who tended to him with compassion, kindness and respect despite the risk to their own health.  Dick was the proud father of four daughters: Dr. Renee (Rob) Hoffman, Chadds Ford, PA; Christine (Denny) Dumm, MPA, Nicktown, PA; Dr. Betsy (T.J.) Metrovich, Pittsburgh, PA; and Rose Bender, PharmD., West Chester, PA.  He was also the grandfather of eight grandchildren whom he loved dearly: Anna and Ben Hoffman; Colton and Mitch Dumm; Elsie, Leo and Joey Metrovich; and Jacob Bender.  Dick was blessed with a gregarious and likeable personality.  He had many friends throughout the years that treated him with love and generosity.  His daughters are grateful to all those in his life who showed their father kindness, particularly in his later years when he was in most need of it.  Dick lived his life-long dream as a steward of the Bender homestead in Carrolltown, PA.  While this was not always easy, he found purpose and enjoyed the comradery with local farmers.  Dick always loved farming and dedicated his life to the fields he toiled over for 50+ years prior to giving it to the next generation in 2016.  An avid WWII history buff, Dick was also a dispatcher for over 20 years at the C & I Railroad in Colver, PA.  Born February 28, 1949, the son of William and Mildred (Yahner) Bender of Carrolltown, he was the fourth of six children: Carol (Larry) Field, William (Pauline) Bender, Janet (Leroy) McNulty, Maureen Mazzotta and Mary Jo (Bob) Sibert.  Dick graduated from Bishop Carroll High School.  He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.  Dick will be greatly missed by all his friends and close family.  Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no visitation and a memorial mass will be held at a later date.  Arrangements are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home in Carrolltown, PA.  In lieu of flowers, Dick’s daughters ask that donations be made to SVDP St. Bernard Food Pantry, PO Box 452, Hastings, PA 16646.
