Patrick J. Lytle

Jan. 1, 1944 – Aug. 22, 2018

Patrick J. Lytle, 74, Altoona, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, August 22, 2018, surrounded by his loved ones.

Born in Philadelphia on Jan.1, 1944, he was the son of the late Bernard N. Lytle and Rebecca (Gates) Lytle Craig.  He attended Saint Mark's Catholic School for his first eight grades, then transferred to Altoona High School from which he graduated in 1962. He entered the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Chikaskia (AO54). The ship participated in the naval blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962.

After the Navy he studied Electrical Engineering at Penn State University, Altoona. In 1967 he accepted a position as a Communication Technician with AT&T Long Lines in Arlington, Va. He enjoyed a 32-year career at AT&T where he worked as a Test Board Supervisor, a Technical Manager, and finally a Network Capacity Engineer.  He was consistently recognized for his exemplary service. His career included time at the prestigious Bell Labs in Middletown, N.J.  Always a hard worker, upon his retirement from AT&T he went to work for Vaxcom as a Technical Telecom Engineer in support of the CIA.

In 2005 Patrick reconnected with an old friend from Altoona, Judith (Morvan) Hoover, with whom he went on to enjoy 13 wonderful years of love.  In 2007 he decided to leave Virginia and built a beautiful home to share with Judith in Altoona.

Patrick loved to spend time with family and friends.  When he returned to Altoona, he became very involved with the Catholic War Veterans and served as Treasurer of the organization.  He loved music, a good conversation, and a cold beer.  He had a natural ability to fix and build things including computers.  His house was his sanctuary and he could often be found reading the paper or cheering on the Pirates or his beloved Penn State, while sitting in his favorite chair.

Patrick is survived by the love of his life, Judith; his daughter,Taryl Millison (Chad) and his grandson, Reid of Alexandria, Va.; his brother, Robert Lytle (Geri) of Beverly Hills, Fla; four sisters: Eleanor Berger (Frank) of Altoona, Dorothy Mitterer of Chardon, Ohio, Betty Cernansky of Johnstown, and Patricia Mingle (Walt) of Fayetteville, N.C.; his sister-in-law, Jeanie Lytle of Altoona; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Charles Craig; and his brother, Bernard "Bernie" Lytle.

The support and care that he received from Grane Hospice Care, Home Instead, and UPMC Altoona Hospice and Palliative Medicine was very deeply appreciated during this very sad time.

His family will be hosting an intimate celebration of life in October.  Details will be finalized in the near future.

Memorial donations may be made in Patrick’s memory to Catholic War Veterans Post 1691, 290 Valley Ave., Altoona, PA 16601.
