Melvin R. Brubaker

Melvin R. Brubaker, 92, of Altoona, and most recently of Arbutus Park Retirement Community, Johnstown, died Tuesday after a long and happy life.

He was born in Altoona, the son of the late Thomas E. and Ethel (McFarland) Brubaker.  He married Madeline E. Schneier September 25, 1944.   She preceded him in death December 19, 1985.  He then married Marian B. Johnson December 27, 1986.  She preceded him in death September 26, 2014. 

Surviving are a sister, Mary Ellen Jones and husband Colson of Altoona; son, Gregory R. (Karen) of Indianapolis IN; a daughter, Janice R.  Dodd (Kenneth) of Dandridge, TN;  son, Thomas F. (Margaret Kelly) of Johnstown PA;  stepdaughter Kay Johnson of Maricopa AZ;  and stepson Mark R. Johnson (Pati) of Jacksonville FL; six grandchildren and one step-grandchild.    

He was preceded in death by his brother, Bill; and a sister, Shirley Weidel.

Melvin was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he was a communion assistant, sang in the choir, served on council and was a Sunday School teacher.   Later he became a member of Simpson-Temple United Parish.

He retired from Bell of Pa. in February of 1983 as a service foreman after 35 years of service.  He continued working another 14 years as a part-time employee for the Wissinger organization. 

He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Corp from March of 1943 to February of 1946.  His last year was spent on Guam as a Staff Sergeant performing aircraft electrical maintenance on B29s.  He also served in the Air Force reserves from December 1947 to December 1951.

Mel worked with the AHS class of “42” committee for class reunions.  

He held memberships in the Hiram Lodge no. 616, the Jaffa Temple Color Guard Unit and the 19th Bombardment Group Association.

Friends will be received from 4-7pm, Friday, May 19, 2017 at Simpson- Temple United Parish, 2212 Sixth Ave., Altoona, PA 16602, followed by a memorial service at 7pm by Pastor Denise Arpino.

The family requests that memorial donations may be made to Simpson-Temple United Parish, 2212 Sixth Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602 in Melvin’s memory.
