Mary Ruth Churella

Mary Ruth Churella, 90, passed away December 28, 2018 in Pittsburgh, PA, surrounded by her loving children. She was born May 16,1928 in Hastings, PA, daughter of the late Alban and Marie (Strittmatter) Dillon. On June 22, 1949 she married Leonard Churella and moved to Patton, PA. In addition to raising her family, Mary Ruth helped her husband manage the marina at Prince Gallitzen State Park from 1965-1970. They then renovated a farm and created the Crow’s Nest and Country Christmas Shop. Mary Ruth was also a Tupperware dealer for 14 years. A member of Queen of Peace Church for many years, she volunteered at the church and the St. Vincent de Paul Patton Food Bank. In 2009, Mary Ruth moved to Pittsburgh to be closer to four of her children. Leonard Churella died on March 14, 1989, a few months shy of their 40th anniversary. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary Ruth was preceded in death by her siblings, Anna and Virginia Dillon, Betty Crist Phelan, Jane Boslet, John, Patrick, and Paul Dillon, and several brothers- and sisters-in-law. She is survived by her children Cathy (Tom) McCort of Washington, PA, Dan (Alice) of Boston, MA, Gary (Debby) of Chester WV, Polly of Pittsburgh, PA, Peggy (Steve) Grieve of Portage, MI, and Emily (Paul) Dausch of Allison Park, PA. Mary Ruth is also survived by her grandchildren, Danielle (Dave) Henzler, Lindy (Jacob) Stossel, Katie Buck, Andrew (Marta) Churella, Timothy and David Churella, Megan (Matt) Caramagno, Alex, Austin, and Brian Grieve, Joel (Molly) Dausch, Gretchen and Hanna Dausch. She also has 9 great-grandchildren, Charlie Ann Henzler, Owen, Oaklee, and Emoree Stossel, Dashiell and Ronan Caramagno, and Declan, Miller and Ellis Dausch. Also surviving are Mary Ruth’s sisters, Katie Holtz of Hastings, PA and Bridget McMullen of Ohio, and numerous nieces and nephews.  Mary Ruth was a humble, kind woman of tremendous faith. Her family and friends are blessed to have had her in their lives and will miss her greatly.  Friends will be received 3:00 to 7:00 pm Friday at Stevens Funeral Home, Inc. 1004 North Fifth Avenue Patton, where a vigil for the deceased will be held.  Funeral Mass 11:00 am Saturday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Patton by Benedictine Fathers.  Committal St. Mary’s Cemetery, Patton.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Patton Food Pantry, 323 Mellon Ave, Suite 2, Patton PA 16668.  (www.stevensfamilyfuneralhomes.com)
