Joseph “Joe” Lurie

LURIE, Joseph “Joe”, 93 of Bedford, Pennsylvania sadly departed this world on October 29th 2017.  He was residing at Colonial Court of Bedford, PA at the time of death.  Joe was born in Altoona, PA on December 23, 1923 to Abram and Sophie Lurie, both immigrants from the Ukraine.  He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Hilda Schulman Lurie in 2006, his brother Melvin Lurie, and his infant grandson Jonah Solomon.  Joe is survived by his two daughters, Royal Duncan (husband Fred) of Mason, Ohio and Jan Housman (husband Jack) of Claysburg, PA., his grandsons David and Ben Duncan, and Ian Housman and his granddaughters Naomi Humphreys and Heidi Solomon.  Joe also leaves behind five great grandchildren:  Liliana, Anna, Briella, Sean, and Parker.

 Joe graduated in 1941 from Altoona High School and worked for National Dairies until he joined the U.S. Army to serve his country in WWII.  He went to basic training in Texas with the 86th Infantry Division and was shipped to the South Central Pacific in June of 1943 where he was in the infantry and then assigned to Military Intelligence.   In 1946, after the war, he married Hilda Schulman, whom he knew from his childhood. In 1951, Joe served his country again during the Korean Conflict where he spent his time in the Army's 815th Ordnance as MOS Chief Clerk.

 Joe and Hilda were married for 60 years and enjoyed traveling throughout the world together.  Joe worked for the Metropolitan Insurance Company for 32 years and then became the head of Industrial Development and Tourism for Bedford County for 10 years.  He was responsible for many industries coming to Bedford County and worked tirelessly to bring the Bedford Springs Hotel back to life.  He loved to play both bridge and the stock market, and avidly followed news, sports and politics. He and his wife attended symphonies both at the Bedford Springs Hotel and in Pittsburgh.  They spent many wonderful times together at their Condo in Myrtle Beach where they welcomed their family and friends.   Joe was also involved in Community Work and was an active member and leader in the Rotary Club, Toastmasters, Elks Club, Chamber of Commerce, Bedford County PTA , the Bedford School Board, The American Legion, The Fraternal Order of Police,  Civil Defense, Mid State Bank and the  The Airport Authority and held leadership positions in many of these organizations.  

Joe was a member of the Agudath Achim Congregation and will be interned at the Agudath Achim Cemetery in Altoona, PA.  The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Agudath Achim Congregation, 1306 Seventeenth Street, Altoona, PA. 16601 and or The Altoona Jewish Federation or the Jewish Memorial Center at 1308 17th St, Altoona, PA 16601, or the American Kidney Foundation. 

Family and friends will be received from 10:00 a.m. through 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, October31, 2017 at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 2309 Broad Avenue, Altoona, PA 16601.  This will be followed by a memorial service at the funeral home at 11:30 a.m.  Following, there will be a graveside service and interment at the Agudath Achim Cemetery at 500 31st. Ave. Altoona, Pennsylvania officiated by Rabbi Josh Wohl and Rabbi Shneur Horowitz.
