Helen A. “Screech” Lightner

June 1, 1923 – June 20, 2016

Helen A. “Screech” Lightner, 93, Altoona, passed away Monday evening at The Village at Morrisons Cove.

She was born in Duncansville, daughter of the late John R. and Arvillia (Clapper) Grove.  On Jan. 30, 1946, she married Joseph “Joe” Lightner in Fredericksburg, Va., and he preceded her in death on Sept. 27, 2003.

Surviving are two sons: Sheldon Sr. (Beverly) of Duncansville, and Joe Jr. (Linda) of Altoona; seven grandchildren: Shawn Holes, Paula Wilt, Sheldon Lightner Jr., Robert Lightner, Jessica Lightner, Dean Lightner and Michael Lightner; and nine great-grandchildren: Amanda Luciano, Michael Luciano, Trent Wilt, Maura Lightner, Dylan Lightner, Kendall Lightner, Keira Jo Lightner, Lucas Michael Lightner and Isaac Dielmann.

She was preceded in death by two daughters: infant Helen Jo Lightner and Connie McCauley; two granddaughters: infant Tricia Jo Lightner and Dawn Luciano; and eight siblings: Delores Irene (Grove) Patterson, John J. Grove, James Grove, Edna (Grove) Lightner, Audra (Grove) Delozier, Evelyn Eckley, Raymond S. Grove and Earl Grove.

Helen was a 1941 graduate of Altoona High School. She was a member of Cannon Station Mennonite Church and Carson Valley Church of the Brethren, and she volunteered at Golden LivingCenter-Hillview.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 24, 2016, at Plank, Stitt & Stevens Funeral Home, 421 Montgomery St., Hollidaysburg, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 25, 2016, Pastor Brad Runkle officiating. Interment will be in Carson Valley Cemetery.
