Hazel L. Weise

Hazel L. Weise, 86, Duncansville, passed away Friday morning at UPMC Altoona.

She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Donald and Elizabeth (Wilt) Varner. She was raised by the late Elmer and Pearl (Anderson) Helsel. She married Lester M. Weise on June 9, 1951, in Cumberland, Md.

Surviving are her husband, with whom she enjoyed the long journey of marriage for 66 years; three sons: Gregg and Patrick, both of Duncansville and Michael (Judy) of Altoona; a daughter, Christine (Greg) of Duncansville; two sisters: Laura Magill of Hollidaysburg and Donna “Sue” Ott of Altoona; two grandchildren: Brian (Nicole) Weise and Colleen Weise; two great-grandchildren: Ryder and Hudson Weise; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Varner; a half brother, Jack Varner; and a half sister, Eleanor Bradigan.

Hazel was a 1951 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School. She retired as an assembler from Veeder-Root after 30 years of service, where she had also served as the recording secretary for the United Steelworkers Union.

Hazel was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Hollidaysburg, where she was a member of Stitch and Sew. She loved making quilts. She had been a member of Friends of the Altoona Hospital, and volunteered at the gift shops at Bon Secours, Altoona Hospital and then UPMC Altoona, where she would have received her 12,000 hour pin this year. She also volunteered for Blair County Special Olympics. She loved her dog, Libby Lou.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018, at Plank, Stitt & Stevens Funeral Home, 421 Montgomery St., Hollidaysburg. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2018, at Zion Lutheran Church, Hollidaysburg, Pastor Ralph Hamer officiating. Interment will be at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.

The family requests that donations in memory of Hazel be made to Stitch and Sew at Zion Lutheran Church, Hollidaysburg, or UPMC Altoona Foundation.
