Dr. William D. Thaler, D.M.D., 86, Altoona, passed away Wednesday after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Bill was born in Johnstown, son of the late Morris and Gertrude (Beim) Thaler. 

He is survived by a daughter, Amy Seltzer of Altoona; five sons: Eric Thaler (Lynnette) of Altoona, Bruce Thaler (Phyllis) of Hollidaysburg, Michael Thaler (Sharon) of Montpelier, VA, Matthew Thaler (Marieta) of Columbia, SC and Jonathan Thaler (Barbara)  of Altoona; thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Bill was also preceded in death by sisters; Helen Sandler and Esther Nederlander.

Bill was a 1949 graduate of Windber High School, where he played basketball.  He was a 1953 graduate of George Washington University, where he played tennis.  He served from 1953 until 1955 in the US Army. He was a 1959 graduate of University of Pittsburgh Dental School and then practiced dentistry from 1959 until 1998.

Bill was an avid fisherman, baker, tennis player and runner. He was also an avid Pitt sports fan.

He was a member of Agudath Achim Synagogue and served as President of the 7th District Dental Society. Bill also served as Coordinator of Continuing Education for University of Pittsburgh Dental School for over 20 years.

Friends will be received from 11:30a.m until a 1p.m. funeral service at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 2309 Broad Avenue, Altoona by Rabbi Josh Wohl.  Interment will be at Agudath Achim Cemetery.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
