Chester Paul “CP” Cassidy, Jr.

Chester Paul “CP” Cassidy, Jr., 85, Altoona, passed away suddenly Monday at UPMC Altoona.  He was born in Altoona, son of the late Chester P. and Olive (Dollar) Cassidy, Sr.  He married Nancy K. Reid on October 27, 1956 at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Nancy; a son David Vanevenhoven(Rick) of Hollidaysburg; three daughters:  Leah Albertson (Rick), of Bloomsburg, Cheryl Steiner (Jim) of Rock Stream, NY, and Jolinda Murray (Steve), of Severna Park, MD; seven grandchildren:  Jessica Eaton, Michael Eaton, Ashley Riley, Tom Steiner, Kelli McGeorge (Tom), Kelsey Hawk (Harley) and Jocelyn Wagner; three great-grandchildren, Grace Eaton, Shaelyn Riley and Bentley Hawk and a sister, Donna Bailey Wagner of Altoona.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jered Eaton; two sisters:  Eleanor Norris and Charolette Imler; and a brother:  Gregory Cassidy.

Paul was a 1950 graduate of Altoona Catholic High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He retired from Butterick as a lithographer with over forty years of service.

He was a member of Graphic Communications International Union where he served as president of the local chapter, life member of the Bavarian Aid Society, and a member of the Swiss Club and the Catholic War Veterans as well as the Knights of Columbus, VFW Post #3, a charter member of Knights of Equity and active in the Central Labor Council.

He was active in local politics, enjoyed cooking, bowling, golfing and fishing and was also a former local baseball and basketball player.

Friends will be received from 5-8 p.m. Friday, July 14, 2017, at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home, 2309 Broad Ave., Altoona where a vigil for the deceased will be held.  A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes, 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2017.  Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
