Charles W. ‘Bud’ Leighty

June 4, 1931 – July 28, 2019

Charles W. “Bud” Leighty, 88, Altoona, passed away peacefully at his residence on Sunday.

Bud was born in Altoona, son of the late Harold and Laura (Brightbill) Leighty. On Dec. 20, 1952, he married Mary Lou Gates, who preceded him in death on Nov. 25, 2013.

Surviving is a son, Jerry W. Leighty, with whom he resided; a daughter, Ellen Breitenbach of Williamsburg; two sisters: Carol Mills and Shirley Cooney both of Altoona; seven grandchildren: Nicole, Jennifer, Charles, Matthew, Elyse, Emily and Rachel; three great-grandchildren: Jason, Ivy and Maddox; and a great-great- grandchild, Lyra.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gary D. Leighty.

Bud was a 1949 graduate of Altoona High School and was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War.

He retired in 2013, at the age of 81, as a mechanic for the US Postal Service after 50 years of service.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association and Blair County Game, Fish and Forestry Association, where he enjoyed attending the Labor Day Ox Roast.

Bud enjoyed trap, pistol and rifle shooting, hunting, playing the Pennsylvania Lottery, drinking Pepsi and eating Hershey bars.

Friends will be received from 12 to 2 and 4 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 2309 Broad Avenue, Altoona, PA 16601, where a funeral service will follow at 6 p.m. by Pastor Douglas McGaffin.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, Blair County Unit, 1004 N. Juniata St., Hollidaysburg, PA  16648.
