Anna M. Moughemer

Anna Mary Moughemer (nee: Seiler), 98, passed away at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, NY on Thursday, November 8, 2018. 

A long time resident of Hollidaysburg, Anna was born August 21,1920, in Juniata where her parents Anna (Baal) and Jacob Seiler lived after emigrating from Croatia, then part of Austria. Her family later purchased and developed a working farm in Donnertown, (Duncansville) where Anna lived until her marriage. Her family helped found the Green Avenue (Farmers’) Market in Altoona. Young Anna helped her mother take goods and produce to market by horse drawn wagon and later by automobile while her father worked in the Altoona Railroad shops.

A member of what author Tom Brokaw called “the Greatest Generation,”   Anna’s life spanned the Great Depression, World War II and the technological age.  While her brothers “Jack” (Jacob) and “Steve“ (Stephen) were deployed in Europe and the South Pacific, during World War II, Anna worked by day at the Altoona Works South Altoona MBA Cafeteria. At night, she joined her sister Catherine McClain and sister-in-law, Shirley Seiler, at Sylvania Company working on electronic tube assembly to fill the US Navy’s order for wartime communications equipment. 

After the war, Anna met William John Moughemer and they married June 8, 1948, at St Patrick church in Newry. Anna and her husband built a home on Brush Mt. Drive Hollidaysburg.   Anna was a graduate of Hollidaysburg High School, class of 1938.  A member of St Mary Church in Hollidaysburg for over 65 years; Anna participated in many activities and committees supporting the church.  For nearly 20 years, she managed the dress department and soft lines at the H. L. Green/McCrory Department Store on the Diamond in Hollidaysburg, retiring in 1982.  

In her later years, Anna Moughemer created dozens of pieced floral and hand quilted geometric quilts and coverlets for family and friends. She enjoyed Seiler Family Reunions, visiting  friends in Florida during Pennsylvania winters and traveling to Europe to see Austria, Slovenia, and Croatia where her family originated. Anna lived in the Spring Manor Apartments in Hollidaysburg for several years before moving to Ingersoll Place assisted living in Niskayuna, NY, where she has resided the past five years. Anna was preceded in death by her husband, William John Moughemer; her brothers, John, Martin, Jacob, Jr., and Stephen Seiler, and by her sister, Catherine McClain. 

She is survived by two daughters, Maryann Kozaczek and husband Michael of Millington, NJ, and Linda Becker and husband Charles of Niskayuna, NY; granddaughter Anna Sprow, great grandson JayMarlee Ruiz, both of DeLand, Florida. Anna is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, in particular the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of her siblings. 

A Celebration of Anna’s life will take place at Plank, Stitt & Stevens Funeral Home, 421 N. Montgomery St., Hollidaysburg, PA on Friday, November 16 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM where a vigil will be held.  A funeral mass on November 17 at St Mary Church in Hollidaysburg at 10:00 AM will be celebrated by Father Anthony J. Legarski. A committal ceremony will follow at New St Mary Cemetery Chapel in Hollidaysburg.  Afterwards, the family will receive relatives and friends at a reception luncheon at The Dream restaurant, 1500 Allegheny St., Hollidaysburg, from 12:30 to 2:45 PM.
